DESCRIPTION

Muhanga is a city located in the Southern Province of Rwanda. It is home to over 358,433 residents as per the 2022 census. With such a large population, there is a huge demand for safe water and proper sanitation to ensure public health and improve the overall living conditions. However, this has not been possible as the main source of drinking water is bottled water. This is not affordable for most people and contributes to environmental pollution.

Hence, the International Transformation Foundation (ITF), in collaboration with Join The Pipe (JTP) Foundation, initiated the Muhanga Water Fountain Project. This would supplement the country’s Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation program, which aims to promote development through reliable and improved water supply and sanitation in Muhanga and other key satellite cities. The Muhanga water fountain aims to not only provide clean water, but also to empower the community economically and socially. Marco, an ITF Volunteer from Europe, played a significant role in the success of this project by raising funds that would cover the construction costs.

The water fountain is expected to significantly improve the livelihoods of at least 400 residents by providing consistent access to clean water, reducing the time spent on water collection, and lowering the incidence of waterborne diseases. Through this initiative, ITF and its partners will enhance the quality of life for the residents of Muhanga and set a precedent for future community-driven projects.
